Microdermabrasion is one of the most trusted anti-aging treatments available today. The process consists of a powerful exfoliating treatment done via machine and is called mechanical exfoliation, fittingly enough. Microdermabrasion removes the upper layer of dead skin on the face, chest, and hands, thus sloughing off those dead cells to create the appearance of shiny, youthful skin.
Different options exist for microdermabrasion treatment: crystal microdermabrasion is the most popular, and is also the original option. With this option, aluminum oxide crystals are sprayed against the skin via a wand, then vacuumed up. These types of crystals are the hardest substance after diamonds, so the feeling is one of instant rejuvenation of the skin through their forceful application. Sometimes other alternatives are offered instead of these crystals, like baking soda, but that is rare and not as powerful.
Then there is the newer diamond-tip microdermabrasion. With this version, no crystal residue remains and it feels much more comfortable. It does a wonderful job and also delivers remarkable results, but lots of women prefer the crystal because that method feels like it is working instantly (which it is.) If you have very sensitive skin, consider giving the diamond-tip a try.
And finally, HydraFacial is a newer version of microdermabrasion which exfoliates and extracts with water, then infuses the skin with revitalizing serums. Some patients feel the results are somewhat less spectacular than the alternatives.
Because of the powerful force of the vacuum-wand sucking up dead cells from the skin, it’s recommended that one always do the treatment in a reputable spa, clinic, or dermatologist’s office with a well-trained and trusted esthetician. The esthetician will determine the depth of the exfoliation via the vacuum and crystals, and throughout the session should inquire about your comfort levels.
The youthful results are instant, but it is best to protect your skin with sunscreen and to avoid the sun as much as possible, especially a day or two after treatment.
