Study after study shows that America is a sleep-deprived nation. A third of all working adults—some of them with dangerous or highly important jobs like miners, police officers, policy makers, surgeons, and teachers—do not get enough sleep. However, sleep deprivation also crosses economic lines. For example, miners get less sleeps than financial workers.
The typical suggestion to cure this is a call for more sleep, sometimes by going to bed earlier. But that’s not really a solution if being unable to get to bed early is already the cause of not sleeping enough.
Part of the problem is the relatively recent phenomenon of the eight-hour sleep block that most health professionals and the general pubic believes to be vital to one’s health.
