Botox For Migraines: A Few FAQs

Botox For Migraines: A Few FAQs

Interested in receiving Botox for migraines in Beverly Hills? A viable solution for those who suffer from chronic, debilitating migraines, check out a few frequently-asked questions about the procedure:

What is Botox?

Before delving into how the treatment works for migraines, it’s important to know what Botox exactly is! Part of a group of drugs known as biologics, or medicines made from living things, Botox is purified protein stemming from the Clostridium botulinum type A.¹ bacteria.

Who Are Candidates For the Procedure?

Botox is injected to prevent headaches in adults 18 years or older who have 15 or more chronic migraines a month. The headaches must last four hours or more to be a candidate.

How Does it Work?

The medication is injected into 31 sites around the head and neck, which takes anywhere from five to 10 minutes to complete. It is given in 12-week intervals in order to dull headache symptoms, and is believed to prevent certain chemicals from reaching nerve endings to reduce pain.

How Quickly Does it Work?

Patients feel relief from migraine symptoms about one week after injections take place. Effectiveness peaks about six weeks after injections, and fades after three months or so. Patients generally require treatment every three months to keep headaches at bay.

What are the Side Effects?

Side effects are mild, and may include temporary neck pain or a post-injection headache. Additional potential side effects include injection site pain and swelling, upset stomach, wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness, redness, and (very rarely) eyelid drooping. Pregnant or breast-feeding women should not use Botox. It’s important to alert your doctor to any side effects you experience while using Botox.

What About Continuing With Acute Migraine Medication?

Botox is a preventative medication, and one that may not alleviate headache symptoms all day long. If still experiencing headache symptoms, you may take acute medications. Your doctor will discuss a treatment plan with you, and determine if ongoing Botox therapy is needed.
